From Fear to Meaning: Art-Based Memory Processing

This workshop presents a structured 10-step art-based protocol designed to explore how fear-associated memories can be processed, contextualized, and re-authored through guided creative practice. Participants are gently introduced to a manageable memory and guided through a sequence of visual and reflective tasks that move from activation to integration.

The process begins with sensory mapping of the memory (colour, texture, spatial intensity), followed by abstract emotional externalization. Participants then engage in chronological sequencing (“before–during–after”), examining narrative organization and perspective shifts. The protocol continues with symbolic expansion, where new elements of safety, support, or grounding are intentionally introduced into the visual field. The final steps focus on titling the artwork and composing a brief micro-narrative to consolidate meaning-making.

This method integrates principles of memory reconsolidation, narrative restructuring, and

visual symbolism. Rather than revisiting trauma directly, the protocol emphasizes containment, distance, and creative control. The workshop offers participants a reflective

framework for understanding how fearful memories are stored, organized, and potentially transformed through structured artistic engagement.
