In this workshop participants will learn about how they can promote and cause social change by exploring the concepts of policy making and advocacy, and the basics of the way they work. Policy can sometimes feel like a black box, so gaining a better understanding can be empowering. They will be presented with an overview of the processes around advocacy, and how to effectively plan an advocacy campaign, from understanding how to distinguish pressing issues and set a goal, to choosing with whom to collaborate to the right form of action for a specific campaign and how to monitor the progress.
Different approaches will be explored, from policy and position papers, petitions, and roundtables to living libraries and world cafés. They will be given a hypothetical goal to advocate for and working in different teams they will have to design a campaign to help bring about progress. With the help of the presenters they will learn to better refine that campaign and adjust it for people’s biases to ensure its effectiveness.
