Responsible AI Use: Developing Solutions to Misuses of AI within Psychology
In the face of the recent boom in AI hype, generative AI technologies have been incorporated into many fields and workplaces. In psychology, there has been talk of AI-assisted diagnoses, chatbot therapy and even running psychological experiments with AI instead of human participants. However, as the hype around these technologies has overtaken research and guidelines, reports concerning AI misuse have emerged surrounding topics such as questionable data protection and adverse mental health effects stemming from overreliance on chatbots. So how do we prevent technological innovations within psychology causing harm?
In the course of this workshop, we will explore the current state of AI in psychology, problematic applications and possible solutions. We will examine case studies inspired by genuine uses of AI within psychology in groups to further develop their ability to detect questionable use and brainstorm improvements that could be made. After this workshop, participants should have gained insight which will help them identify irresponsible design in both AI and other contexts and have the confidence to independently address issues.
Breaking Boundaries by Bringing Change: The Role of Advocacy
In this workshop participants will learn about how they can promote and cause social change by exploring the concepts of policy making and advocacy, and the basics of the way they work. Policy can sometimes feel like a black box, so gaining a better understanding can be empowering. They will be presented with an overview of the processes around advocacy, and how to effectively plan an advocacy campaign, from understanding how to distinguish pressing issues and set a goal, to choosing with whom to collaborate to the right form of action for a specific campaign and how to monitor the progress.Different approaches will be explored, from policy and position papers, petitions, and roundtables to living libraries and world cafés. They will be given a hypothetical goal to advocate for and working in different teams they will have to design a campaign to help bring about progress. With the help of the presenters they will learn to better refine that campaign and adjust it for people’s biases to ensure its effectiveness.
